October 13, 2014

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A Greek opposition party demanding that most of the country’s bailout debts be canceled has widened its lead over the governing conservatives, according to a new opinion poll.

The left-wing Syriza led with 26.7 percent, while the center-right New Democracy had 20.2 percent in the GPO survey for private Mega television announced late Monday.

No margin of error was given for the Oct. 9-13 poll of 1,200 people, which showed Syriza improving from a fractional lead six months ago.

Conservative Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has promised to lead the country out of recession and ease austerity measures by the end of the year. But he could be forced to call an early election in February when the government will require opposition party votes in parliament to elect Greece’s new president.
