UEFA reminds on youth academies after Barcelona plan blocked

May 1, 2015

NYON, Switzerland (AP) — UEFA has reminded clubs and football associations of rules controlling overseas youth academies after the Danish soccer federation rejected a request from Barcelona.

The Danish governing body said it has informed UEFA after blocking Barcelona’s plan for a permanent academy near Copenhagen training players as young as 6.

Citing concerns over intensively training young children and taking talent from local clubs, the Danish federation said it told UEFA any overseas club’s request would be rejected.

UEFA says it previously advised member federations in 2013 about upholding FIFA rules on youth academies.

UEFA says national bodies must be “informed of the various activities of foreign clubs in their territory and act as the supervisory authority.”

Barcelona is currently serving a one-year transfer ban imposed by FIFA for breaking youth recruitment rules.
