Ironton area man sentenced in drug case

IRONTON - An Ironton area man was sentenced Wednesday in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court to four years in prison in a drug case.

Rodney Spears, 24, of Ohio 243, Ironton, pleaded guilty to aggravated trafficking in drugs (meth) and was sentenced by Judge Andy Ballard. As part of a plea agreement, Spears could be released to the STAR Community Justice Center after serving 18 months in prison. STAR operates a six-month drug abuse program.

In an unrelated case, Justin M. Wells, 30, of Township Road 1021, South Point, was sentenced to 41 months in prison for trafficking in drugs and vandalism. He also was fined $10,000.

In other cases:

n Ronald E. Pemberton Jr., 35, of Township Road 137W, Ironton, was sentenced to three years in prison for attempt to commit burglary. He also was ordered to pay $5,868.07 in restitution and court costs. He could be released after serving nine months in prison to a six-month program at the STAR Justice Center.

n Jeffrey D. Saul, 39, of the 2400 block of South 10th Street, Ironton, admitted violating community control sanctions and was sentenced to seven months in the Lawrence County Jail. He also was ordered to pay $1,700 in restitution and court costs.

n Frederick Jenkins Jr., 40, of the 300 block of High Street, Coal Grove, pleaded guilty to trafficking in drugs (meth), possession of drugs and tampering with evidence. Final sentencing was set for Oct. 10.

n Urian M. Benicker, 34, of the 700 block of Vernon Street, Ironton, pleaded guilty to aggravated trafficking in drugs. Final sentencing was set for Oct. 21.

n Jason Stapleton, 33, of the 1200 block of South 9th Street, Ironton, pleaded guilty to possession of heroin and possession of drugs (meth). He was placed on community control sanctions for four years and ordered to complete the program at STAR.

n Jeffrey L. Anderson, 59, of Ohio 141, Kitts Hill, pleaded guilty to possession of drugs. He was placed on community control sanctions and ordered to get drug treatment.

n Evan L. Henry, 38, of Township Road 169, Pedro, admitted violating community sanctions. Those sanctions were extended for a year, and he was ordered to do 250 hours of community service and was placed on 30 days of home confinement on an ankle monitor.

n Joshua B. Kelley, 32, of the 100 block of Center Street, Coal Grove, admitted violating community control sanctions and was ordered to get drug treatment and pay court costs.

n Christopher J. Ervin, 51, of the 2800 block of South 5th Street, Ironton, pleaded guilty to possession of drugs (meth) and was placed on community control sanctions for four years. Ervin was ordered to complete a drug treatment program at Mended Reeds and pay court costs.

n Jeremy Artrip, 37, of Louisa, Kentucky, pleaded guilty to possession of heroin. He was placed on community control sanctions for four years and was ordered to complete the program at STAR and do 200 hours of community service.

n Casey R. Bartrum, 22, of Ohio 522, Pedro, pleaded innocent to a charge of receiving stolen property. A $20,000 recognizance bond was set in the case.

n Mary K. Groves, 39, of the 900 block of North 5th Street, Ironton, pleaded innocent to possession of drugs. A $15,000 recognizance bond was set in the case.
