Fitchburg Council Joins Housing Pilot

FITCHBURG -- Following nearly a two-hour public hearing, the City Council on Tuesday opted into a pilot program that aims to rehabilitate vacant and blighted houses in five northern Central Massachusetts communities.

Through the program, NewVue Liability to Assets, the nonprofit community development organization will purchase, flip and resell vacant homes in Clinton, Gardner, Athol, Leominster and Fitchburg.

Executive Director of Community Development Tom Skierawksi told councilors the state may fund the program in the amount of $2.5 million annually for the next three years.

The money would be dispersed among all five communities.

Openings on Lunenburg boards

LUNENBURG -- Looking to get involved? The town is looking for volunteers to serve on various committees.

There are openings across various groups, including the Agricultural Commission, Cultural Council, and the Zoning Board of Appeals.

To apply, fill out a talent bank form on the town’s website and submit it to Elaine Peterson at epeterson@lunenburgonline.com or fill one out at the Board of Selectmen’s office.

The vacancies are:

- Agricultural Commission: 2 members, 2 alternatives

- Architectural Preservation Commission: 1 vacancy for a design professional/crafts person

- Cultural Council: multiple vacancies

- Public Access Committee: 2 vacancies

- Zoning Board of Appeals: 2 associate vacancies

Leominster Cannoli Festival is back

LEOMINSTER -- The city announced Wednesday that one of the year’s most anticipated events, the annual Cannoli Festival, will be returning this year on Thursday, Oct. 4.

Now in its third year, the festival will be held in downtown Leominster and run from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Participating vendors have yet to be announced but previous years have seen increasingly more participants with last year’s festival attracting nearly 20 different bakers.

The event is free and open to the public. A rain date has been scheduled for Oct. 11.
