Student charged with Haverhill machete attack

HAVERHILL, Mass. (AP) — A Haverhill High School senior has been ordered held without bail for what police are calling a gang-related machete attack on two others at a party.

Joan Manuel Mendez-Sanchez pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to attempted murder and assault with a dangerous weapon charges.

School officials say the 19-year-old Mendez-Sanchez has been barred from school pending a resolution to his case.

The Eagle-Tribune (http://bit.ly/11UTtKQ ) reports that a fight broke out at the party on Friday night when a teenager became jealous because Mendez-Sanchez was dancing with his girlfriend. Witnesses say Mendez-Sanchez had not been invited.

Witnesses told police that Mendez-Sanchez had injured two people who went to the hospital with serious but not life-threatening machete wounds.

Mendez-Sanchez denied injuring the victims.
