Brazil teachers hold rally for higher wages
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — About 500 school teachers in Rio de Janeiro have peacefully held a protest in the city center.
The teachers have been on strike for a month and are calling for higher wages. They’ve held several protests in Rio, where the final match of the World Cup will be held next month.
The rally Thursday blocked main roads during Rio’s rush hour, sparking congestion for commuters. It ended about 8 p.m. local time.
It’s the latest protest to hit Brazil since nationwide massive, anti-government demonstrations broke out last June.
Since then, the protests have significantly diminished in size, but not in number. In recent months, Brazil has seen near daily demonstrations, mostly in Rio and the country’s biggest city Sao Paulo.
