Three WVC Teams Playing State Semifinals Today
The Wyoming Valley Conference is out to play spoiler in today’s PIAA field hockey semifinals.
It’s not that District 2 champions Wyoming Seminary (Class A) and Valley West (2A) are underdogs, but rather, that they are facing teams from the mighty District 3.
Across the three classifications, District 3 in Southern Pennsylvania — York and Lancaster counties are among the prominent counties in the district — has nine of a possible 12 semifinalists in today’s state field hockey games. The other teams are Sem and Valley West, as well as District 11 Class 3A champion Emmaus.
When the PIAA expanded from two to three classifications in 2016, District 3 had five semifinalists, which jumped to seven in 2017, and reached a new high with nine this year.
Considering District 3 has a whopping 89 schools playing field hockey, its dominance is not all that surprising. Compare that with District 2, which has 22 field hockey teams, and the entire state, which has 275 field hockey-playing schools.
Action gets underway for both local teams at 6 p.m. tonight.
That’s when Wyoming Seminary will play Greenwood at Central Columbia in a rematch of last year’s state title game, as well as when Valley West takes on Palmyra at Emmaus.
There is one other local high school team in action 6 p.m. tonight at Exeter Twp. High School in Reading, where Holy Redeemer’s girls volleyball team will play Delone Catholic in the PIAA Class 2A semifinals.
