Volunteer tutors needed for kindergarten students

September 1, 2018

Lincoln, Douglas and Schurz Schools are looking for volunteers to tutor kindergarten students for the upcoming school year.

Ready, Set, Read is a daily volunteer reading tutorial program whose mission is “the promotion of community health through the education of our children.” The program’s goal is to bring these children’s reading skills to grade level, or above, by the end of their kindergarten grade school year. Ready, Set, Read will provide daily supplemental tutoring in reading to kindergartners who will benefit from one-on-one tutoring. Volunteer tutors will work in teams guided by a reading teacher.

Anyone who is interested in helping children become better readers is a potential Ready, Set, Read volunteer. Tutoring materials are designed to be simple and straightforward to administer. No prior teaching experience is necessary. Training for the program will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 18, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Douglas Elementary School, 1101 Prospect St.

Tutors will commit to an hour per week from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. A background check is required and will need to be processed and approved before anyone begins volunteering. For more information about the program or how to get involved, contact Nancy Zimmermann at zimmerdn@charter.net or 920-261-8587.
