Baylor 78, Southern Methodist 74

February 11, 1996

WACO, Texas (AP) _ Brian Skinner had his way with Southern Methodist’s weak interior defense, scoring 27 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to lead Baylor to a 78-74 victory Saturday night.

Skinner was about all the Bears (7-13, 2-6 Southwest Conference) could rely on as he made 11-of-14 shots. Subtract his performance and the rest of the team made less than one-third of its shots.

It was enough, though, as John Perkins made three 3-pointers and scored 11 points. Doug Brandt and Roddrick Miller each scored 10 points.

The Mustangs (6-14, 2-6) shot 61.5 percent in the first half as they built a 42-36 lead. However, they cooled off to 40.6 percent after intermission and couldn’t maintain their edge.

SMU had four players in double-figures, led by Troy Matthews’ 19 points.

Jay Poerner had 18 points and nine rebounds, while Jemeil Rich and Jabari Hearn each had 13 points and seven rebounds. Bobby Dimson scored 10 points.
