Gusty winds to usher in much colder temperatures

December 17, 2018

After a weekend of mild temperatures and rain, gusty winds will bring in much colder temperatures through mid-week.

With a high of 49 degrees, Danbury airport set a new warm temperature record on Saturday. The high was four degrees above average. Sikorsky Memorial Airport in Stratford and Tweed-New Haven Airport had highs of 52 degrees Saturday; eight degrees above normal.

Rainfall on Sunday ranged from .42 of an inch in Essex to .88 of an inch in Madison. Southwest Connecticut had an average half-inch of rain.

The National Weather Service’s Boston office says the change in the weather is caused by a cold air surge across the Great Lakes kicking out the storm off Nantucket.

“Behind this storm, cold air surges in with blustery northwest winds potentially gusting in excess of 40 mph, especially over high terrain, along the coast and over the waters. Wind chills dropping down into the single digits, roughly 10-15 degrees in some areasm, down from actual forecast lows around 20° tonight.”

In Connecticut, highs will be in the low to mid 40s Monday followed by lows in the 20s tonight and then highs only in the low to mid 30s Tuesday.

With winds gusting as high as 40 mph on Tuesday, will make it feel much colder with a windchill between 10 and 20 degrees. Tuesday evening will have the coldest temperatures of the week with a low of 16 forecast for inland Connecticut and 21 along the Long Island Sound shoreline.

Looking ahead, rain is in the forecast for Thursday night and Friday with temperatures a few degrees above normal.
