SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AP) _ A bus plummeted down a ravine north of San Salvador on Monday, killing 43 people and injuring 30 others, rescue officials said.

The bus was driving south from the northern town of Quezaltepeque and fell off the road 11 miles north of the capital, rescue worker Jose Alvarado said.

``We have bodies of women, children, and elderly citizens. It's a tragedy,'' he said.

Twenty-nine people, including the bus driver, were declared dead at the scene, and another 14 died after being taken to local hospitals, Alvarado said.

The bus driver lost control of the bus because he was speeding and tried to pass another vehicle on a curve, police said.
