Liberty council to decide fate of police chief tonight

November 29, 2018

A vote tonight by the Liberty city council will decide the fate of Liberty Police Chief Thomas Claunch.

Claunch was placed on administrative leave with pay on Nov. 5 while an investigation was completed. The city called the special session for 6 p.m. on Nov. 29 at city hall.

There was no formal announcement made by the city and City Manager Tom Warner would not elaborate on the cause for the leave. He said that it was a personnel issue and declined to comment further. An announcement was expected before the Thanksgiving holidays, but it did not happen.

Unconfirmed reports that the chief had already resigned were not true, according to the city attorney.

“As of this time the City does not have a copy of any resignation letter from Chief Claunch,” said Liberty city attorney Brandon Davis. “He is currently still on paid administrative leave.”

Mayor Carl Pickett in an earlier interview said the city had contracted with an outside attorney to look into the matter and did not want to render any judgement until the investigation was complete.

Claunch was hired on March 10, 2015 to head the department and his first official date of hire was April 1, 2015.

Claunch previously served as assistant police chief for Webster, Texas for 11 years.
