“During our search process for this role, we met with many incredibly talented individuals. Ann, by far, rose to the top with her proven ability for strategic and operational excellence, both balanced by her true passion for relationships and caring for the whole person,” said Lisa Shannon, Allina Health chief operating officer. “She brings to us a wealth of experience from both academic and community hospitals.”
For the past ten years, Rice has served as the chief executive officer of the University of California, Davis, Medical Center in Sacramento. The academic health system includes one of the country’s best medical schools, a 625-bed acute-care teaching hospital, a 1,000-member physicians practice group and the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing. It is also home to a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, an international neurodevelopmental institute, a stem cell institute and a comprehensive children’s hospital.
“It is a privilege to join this highly regarded institution and I am honored to have been selected to become its next president,” Rice said. “Knowing the quality of the leaders and medical staff I’ve already met, I can easily understand why Abbott Northwestern has the exceptional reputation it has and I look forward to joining this outstanding team.”
Just this week, the U.S. News & World Report’s 2018-19 Best Hospitals report ranked Abbott Northwestern Hospital number one in the Twin Cities and second overall in Minnesota. Additionally, Abbott Northwestern received national rankings in eight specialty areas: cardiology and heart surgery (#19), diabetes and endocrinology (#23), geriatrics (#38), gynecology (#27), neurology and neurosurgery (#42), orthopedics (#26), pulmonology (#47), and urology (#50). Abbott Northwestern was also rated as high performing in gastroenterology & GI surgery, and nephrology.
Prior to her current role, Rice served in leadership roles in many other health systems, including holding the role of chief financial officer and chief operating officer for the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Ann has a baccalaureate degree in Industrial Administration from Iowa State University and a master’s degree in Accounting from the University of Iowa.
In addition to her rich background in hospital leadership, Rice has a strong commitment to the community and supporting causes in health care. In May, she was recognized by the United Cerebral Palsy of Sacramento and Northern California as its Humanitarian of the year. She is frequently named among Becker’s Hospital Review “Women Hospital and Health System Leaders to Know” and has been recognized by many other organizations and publications in California and Iowa.
