Man shot to death in third homicide in Cleveland in four hours, seventh in two days

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A 24-year-old man was shot to death late Monday in the city’s Cudell neighborhood marking the third homicide in Cleveland in a four-hour span.

The shooting happened about 11:40 p.m. Monday at a home on West 91st Street, just south of Madison Road.

The man, identified as Antoine Reese of Cleveland, was found dead in a hallway with a gunshot wound to the chest, police said.

Police released few details on the shooting. A police spokesman said a gunshot was heard before someone called 911.

No arrests have been made in the case.

It’s the 97th homicide in Cleveland in 2018. The city had 85 homicides at this time last in 2017.

The death was the fourth on Monday and the seventh in two days. Charges have been filed in one of the six cases.

A 29-year-old man was shot to death about 8 p.m. Monday on East 146th Street south of St. Clair Avenue in the city’s South Collinwood neighborhood.

Gerald Hays of Cleveland was talking to another man in his driveway when a white van drove up. A man got out of the van, shot Hays and sped off.

About 15 minutes before that shooting, a maintenance worker at Broadway Christian Church on Engle Road in Cleveland’s North Broadway neighborhood smelled a foul odor and found a woman dead under a stair case, police said.

Police said the woman, who has not yet been identified, died from head trauma.

Four others have been killed since Sunday, including a 94-year-old woman who was beaten to death early Monday during a home invasion in the city’s Slavic Village neighborhood.

Two others— identified as Francis Sanchez, 27, and Rebecca Vazquez, 34— were fatally shot early Sunday while sitting in a stolen car on West 81st Street and Detroit Avenue in the Cudell neighborhood.

Victor Maar II, 35, was killed about 2:30 p.m. Sunday while checking on one of his rental properties on West 146th Street. Derrick Walker Jr., 18, was charged with aggravated murder in Maar’s death. He has not been arrested.
