36th Annual Mullins Golden Leaf Festival activities cancelled due to Hurricane Florence
MULLINS, S.C. – Organizers of the 36th Annual Mullins Golden Leaf Festival said several activities have been cancelled due to Hurricane Florence.
Committee chairwoman Holly Jackson said the festival’s third annual BBQ Cook-off set for Friday and Saturday will go on along with Saturday’s car and tractor show.
However, Saturday morning’s 36th annual Lions Club Run for Right 5k race, the annual parade and day of entertainment have been cancelled.
“Unfortunately, Smith Haven Park is drenched with water,” Jackson said.
The Anything Butt and BBQ Cook-off kicks things off on Friday with a performance from the Holiday Band at 7 p.m. The big cook-off will follow on Saturday. The event features more than $12,500 in prize money.
Jackson said the cook-off has consistently had better attendance and cooking teams. “We’re paying down to fifth place, which is really something special,” she said.
Mayor William “Bo” McMillan said organizers feel great about the event and its growth.
“We’re very proud of the event and it is actually the largest cash prize in the southeast,” he said. “We have more than 20 of the top cooking teams signed-up.”
“We feel like it makes a huge difference in the quality of life we’re trying to pull together for the citizens of Mullins,” McMillan said. “Each event promises good times and lots of fun,” he said.
