Top S.A. paella eatery opens 2nd, downtown-area location
The downtown area welcomed its newest restaurant and bar space Friday with the opening of San Antonio’s second Toro Kitchen + Bar location.
After a lengthy renovation process that dates back to November, the restaurant adds life to St. Paul Square at 1142. E. Commerce St., featuring a lunch, brunch and dinner menu that is heavy on Spanish dishes such as paella and various tapas. Toro also keeps a large variety of Spanish wines in house.
“The menu will be exactly the same (as the Stone Oak location),” co-owner Gerardo De Anda said. “The biggest difference is that we have a much bigger space (2,500 square feet) that’s more convenient for tourists and downtown residents.”

Toro also features a downstairs bar area with a speakeasy feel that operates separately as Cellar Mixology. The logo for the bar features a rose bloom above the letter “C.” Hector Vargas has created a new lineup of specialty cocktails in the space that include drinks made with liquid nitrogen, house infusions and a little smoke.
“This will be an an entirely new concept for us,” De Anda said. “The rose used to be a sign of secrecy for meetings and whatnot. We’ll be featuring a lot of modern drinks in that space and a small food menu that will include charcuterie.”
Cellar Mixology, which is open from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays, also operates as a cozy live music venue and is equipped with a piano.
