KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) _ The Kansas City Royals bought the contract of pitcher Jeff Suppan from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday.

Suppan, a right-hander, was to join the team in Anaheim on Friday.

Suppan was 1-7 with a 6.68 ERA in 13 games for Arizona, all of them starts. He was 4-3 with a 3.63 ERA in 12 starts for Triple-A Tucson.

A second-round pick out of high school by the Boston Red Sox in the June 1993 draft, Suppan was taken by Arizona in the 1997 expansion draft.

Suppan was 9-6 with a 5.99 ERA in 39 games over three seasons with the Red Sox.

The Royals designated utility infielder Luis Rivera for assignment to make room for Suppan on the 40-man roster. Rivera had 22 hits in 89 at-bats (.247) for the Royals.
