Francois Steyn banned for 5 weeks after SANZAR appeal
SYDNEY (AP) — Former Springbok Francois Steyn has been banned for five weeks after SANZAR appealed against the outcome of one of its own disciplinary hearings, which initially cleared Steyn of making a dangerous tackle in Super Rugby.
Steyn was sent off for a tip tackle on All Blacks fylhalf Aaron Cruden in the round-six game between the Sharks and the Chiefs on March 21.
Referee Angus Gardner’s decision to red card the Sharks center was questioned after the television official recommended just a yellow card, but was ignored by Gardner.
A disciplinary hearing said the red card should be removed from Steyn’s record because two other Sharks players were involved in the tackle.
SANZAR successfully overturned that decision on Tuesday. Steyn will miss four games.
