Herd men’s soccer knocks off ODU

HUNTINGTON — Marshall University handed Old Dominion University its first Conference USA men’s soccer defeat this season Saturday night while t he T hu ndering Herd notched its first league victory.

Marshall (3-4-2 overall, 1-1-1 conference) defeated Old Dominion 4-2 before a turnout of 374 spectators at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex. Old Dominion, last season’s C-USA tournament champion, slipped to 5-3-1 for the season and is 3-1-0 in conference matches.

Old Dominion took an early lead on Niko Klosterhalfen’s goal, but Marshall stormed into a 2-1 lead with goals about three minutes apart from Jamil Roberts and Illal Osmanu. The Monarchs pulled even at halftime with Daniel Corona’s goal.

Collin Mocynas provided the Herd’s winning margin with an assist from Gianni Bouzoukis at 64:47. Kelan Swales added a goal with one second remaining.

Marshall steps away from C-USA to play a 7 p.m. Wednesday match against East Tennessee State in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Cross country

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Alex Minor for the Marshall men’s cross country team placed 57th in a race with 359 runners Saturday at the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh University.

Minor’s time for the 8K was 25:21.

Madelyn Garrison led the Thundering Herd women with a 108th place finish in a 6K race with a time of 23:37.

The meet had more than 1,000 runners from more than 100 schools.

Utah State was the men’s team winner and Peter Seufer from Virginia Tech finished first with a time of 24:11. Marshall was 38th out of 41 finishing schools. Siena won the women’s team title and Siobhan Quinn of Canisius took first with a time of 21:02. The Herd women were 41st out of 43 teams.

Volleyball

RUSTON, La. — Marshall (7-10, 0-3 Conference USA) is at Louisiana Tech (6-11, 1-1) for a 2 p.m. Sunday volleyball match.

UAB defeated Marshall in a Friday match, 3-0. LA Tech lost its most recent match at Louisiana-Monroe, 3-2.

Women’s soccer

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Marshall women’s soccer (5-4-2 overall) takes a 3-1-0 Conference USA record into a 1 p.m. Sunday match against Charlotte at Transamerica Field. The 49ers are 7-3-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the conference.

Marshall won Friday at Old Dominion, 3-0. Charlotte won its Friday match at home against Western Kentucky, 2-1.
