Haye told to consider retirement after surgery

November 17, 2013

LONDON (AP) — Former WBA champion David Haye has undergone surgery on his right shoulder and canceled an all-British fight against Tyson Fury for the second time after being told to consider retirement.

In a statement released by Hayemaker Boxing on Sunday, Haye said the surgery is “a bitter pill to swallow” after he was forced to cancel the Feb. 8 fight in Manchester on the advice of doctors.

Haye had postponed the original bout after requiring six stitches in a deep cut above his left eye sustained during sparring earlier this year.

He said he went through the “unluckiest” year of his career after being hampered with injuries. He did not say whether he would be retiring soon but insisted that he considers “my boxing career a huge success.”
