Jefferson boys paddle Fort Atkinson

November 22, 2018

FORT ATKINSON — Ben Sukow and James Monogue each scored 17 points as the visiting Jefferson boys basketball team topped Fort Atkinson 79-46 in a season-opening nonconference game.

Jefferson started a little slow but utilized a 10-2 run to close the first half to gain a 10-point edge. The Eagles started the second half with a 7-0 spurt and never looked back.

“We had 14 turnovers and a majority of those were in the first half,” Jefferson head coach Greg Jefferies said.

“At halftime, we made some adjustments. We talked about what we needed to do better. We were able to get more post touches in the second half. We ended up going 6-for-8 from 3-point range (in the second half). They were basically inside-out looks.”

Jefferson senior guard Ben Sukow was a force on both ends of the floor.

“He dictated what the other team was doing,” Jefferies said. “He guarded their point guard (Wixom) and he had to deal with Ben’s pressure every time down the floor. He knocked down a couple of threes which was huge for us to have that momentum swing ... Ben definitely got the game ball tonight.”

Senior guard Ryan Brost added 10 points for Jefferson.

The Eagles connected on nine 3-pointers and scored 45 second-half points.

In a rivalry affair, crowd noise and energy kept Jefferson going when momentum was on their side.

“We had a big crowd tonight,” Jefferies said. “We had a lot of Jefferson fans over there cheering us on and their presence was definitely felt.”

Jefferson next plays at Whitewater on Thursday, Nov. 29.
