Kayakers report finding suspected human remains in gorge
TAOS — Two kayakers found what they believe are human remains Sunday in the waters below the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge.
John Nettles told The Taos News on Monday that he and fellow longtime river runner Patrick O’Brien found what he said appeared to be the body of a man washing against some rocks about a mile and a half downriver from the bridge, a span 800 feet above the canyon floor where numerous people jump to their deaths each year.
O’Brien took a GPS reading to estimate the coordinates of their location and Nettles placed a red baseball cap where the body was found to serve as a marker.
They contacted New Mexico State Police to make a report, but the agency as of Monday afternoon had yet to release any information.
Nettles said a friend who volunteers with a local search and rescue team had asked him to keep an eye out for a body if they went on the river over the weekend.
