Slicers girls tennis stays perfect, tops Trojans

La Porte’s girls tennis team kept its perfect record intact by beating Chesterton 4-1 at home on Friday. At No. 1 singles, Alaina Majors won 6-1, 6-1 for the Slicers (14-0, 4-0 Duneland Athletic Conference), and Rachel Kaminski rolled 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. At No. 3 singles, Allison Varda was victorious 6-1, 6-4, and Molly Reed/Aniya Kennedy prevailed 7-6 (3), 7-6 (6) at No. 2 doubles. At No. 1 doubles, Jory Bales/Emma Keene fell in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. La Porte’s JV won 4-1.

Cougars baseball drubs Panthers

New Prairie’s baseball team routed South Bend Washington 22-0 in five innings on Senior Night on Friday. Roman Kuntz led the Cougars (16-3, 7-2 Northern Indiana Conference), going 2-for-2 with a home run, a double, and three RBI. Max McCorkel and Frank Turley both had two hits, and Turley earned four RBI. Josh Conley threw four innings to tally the win, striking out seven and walking none. Dimitri Scofield struck out three in one inning.

NP softball routs Washington

Quinlan Eggert drove in four runs, while Lauren Wilcoxson tripled and knocked in a pair as New Prairie’s softball team walloped South Bend Washington 16-2 in five innings in South Bend on Friday. Karissa Gilpin struck out three in two innings.

Area prep athletic schedule changes

La Porte’s baseball home game on Monday with Boone Grove has been cancelled due to respective conference makeups. La Porte will play at New Prairie in softball on Monday at 4:30 p.m. in an added game for both teams. Slicers’ JV softball will host New Prairie on Monday at 4:30 p.m. L.P. softball has also added a varsity softball doubleheader on May 18 at 10 a.m. at Carroll (Fort Wayne). Friday’s Marquette softball game at Illiana Christian was cancelled due to field conditions. Michigan City’s baseball game at Chesterton was bumped to Monday for the same reason. The Wolves’ home game with the Trojans has been moved to Thursday.

La Porte Baseball Summer Camp in June

The La Porte Slicer baseball coaching staff and players will conduct the annual summer baseball camp June 10-June 13 for students currently in Kindergarten through fifth grade, at Schreiber Field. Times are: K-second grade, 10-11:25 a.m.; and third-fifth grade, 11:30 a.m.-12:55 p.m. Cost of the camp will be $40 per player. Players should wear tennis shoes or cleats, shorts, sweat pants, or baseball pants and a T-shirt. Players should bring baseball gloves. Instructors will be La Porte High School baseball players and coaches. Registration due date is June 4. Players will receive a T-shirt, but they can’t assure T-shirt sizes on late registrations. Cougars golf at invite

New Prairie shot a 418 on Friday in the Florence Troeger Invitational at Knollwood Country Club. Mason Taylor and Nathan Middlebrook both carded 103s, one shot better than Dylan Pohl. James Goodlink posted a 108 and Nolan Szymanski a 109. Medalist Baz Furry (74) led Penn to the team title with a 311.

Westville golf outing May 25

The Westville Alumni Association will host a golf outing May 25 at the Michigan City Municipal Course. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. with lunch at 11:30 and a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Scott. C. Knoll Scholarship Fund. In the 12 years of the event, over $75,000 in scholarships have been awarded to graduating Westville seniors. The outing will be a four-person scramble. Entry fee is $65 per individual and $260 per foursome before May 17 and $75 per golfer after May. Entry is limited to the first 100 paid golfers. The fee includes lunch, greens fee, cart and meal after golf. Prizes will be awarded for longest drive, closest to the pin and longest putt. Deadline is May 23. Legion Post 83 to hold baseball tryout

The American Legion Hamon Gray Post 83 baseball committee is organizing for the upcoming season for its Junior division team. Participants must be age 17 or younger as of Dec. 31. Practices begin in late May and games are played in June and July. An open tryout will be held from 1-3 p.m. on May 19 at Clarke Park. Singletary to speak at FCA banquet

Chicago Bears Hall of Fame linebacker Mike Singletary will be the keynote speaker at the Northwest Indiana Fellowship of Christian Athletes Night of Champions fundraising banquet May 22 at the Avalon Manor Banquet Center in Merrillville. The event is used to create awareness of ministry outreach and to raise funds to support programs and activities organized by Northwest Indiana FCA. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are free but registration is required.

Marquette girls tennis has added a match at Hammond Gavit on May 14 at 4:15 p.m.

2019-20 Slicer athletic physicals

The La Porte High School athletic department is now scheduling appointments for athletic physicals for the 2019-20 school year for athletes that are presently in grades 8-11. Physicals will be conducted on Thursday from 5-8 p.m. in the main gym at La Porte High School at a cost of $20.
