Rival Clans Clash in Mogadishu

January 29, 1995

MOGADHISHU, Somalia (AP) _ At least five people were killed Sunday when rival clans clashed in southern Mogadishu with machine guns, automtic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades.

Clan elders of the Murasade and Abgal have failed to implement a cease-fire reached earlier this month between their militias.

The two clans battled for about 90 minutes Sunday in the Bermuda area of south Mogadishu. The area is about half a mile from the seaport where U.N. forces are preparing to withdraw from Somalia.

All U.N. troops in Somalia will be withdrawn by March 31.
