MARTY BALIN DIES

LOS ANGELES (AP) — If you ever stayed in a hotel and the art on the walls had something weird about it, it could have been the work of Marty Balin of Jefferson Airplane. Balin said in a 1997 AP interview he used to take the paintings off the hotel walls, add little touches of his own, then put them back. He said he hoped someone would see it and say, “What is THAT?” He also used to practice his art skills with markers on the hotel sheets. Balin died Thursday in Tampa, Florida, on the way to the hospital for an undisclosed ailment. He was 76.

OTIS RUSH DIES

CHICAGO (AP) — Bluesman Otis Rush has died at the age of 84. His manager, Rick Bates, says Rush died Saturday from complications from a stroke suffered in 2003. Rush was one of the major players in the Chicago “West Side Sound” in the 1950s and ’60s. He had a hit with his first recording: “I Can’t Quit You Baby,” which reached No. 6 on the Billboard R&B chart in 1956. Rush was a self-taught guitarist and he was left-handed, which is why he played guitars upside down. He was a sharecropper until he saw Muddy Waters in concert and decided then to become a professional musician. Bates says Rush did not get the attention other blues musicians did because he was “not a show business guy.”

LAS VEGAS MARKS ONE YEAR SINCE ROUTE 91 HARVEST FESTIVAL SHOOTINGS

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Jason Aldean’s spokesman says Aldean will not attend any events in Las Vegas marking the one-year anniversary of the shootings during the Route 91 Harvest Festival. Aldean was on stage when a gunman opened fire from a nearby hotel, killing 58 and wounding hundreds of others. The shooting began at 10:01 p.m., and at that time tonight, the lights will dim on the Las Vegas Strip. A ceremony will be held today at a memorial garden, with the names of the victims read aloud. The festival site is fenced off and covered with green sheeting, and even if you could peek inside, there’s not much to see besides asphalt. MGM owns the property and has not said what its future will be, nor has the company given a timeline for when it will make a decision.

CHER WOULD HAVE LIKED HER KENNEDY CENTER HONOR DURING THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Cher is thrilled that she will get a Kennedy Center Honor. She just wishes it would have come sooner. Cher admits she had wanted to get one so badly when Barack Obama was president, because she says it “would be so cool if he was sitting there.” When she did get the call, she was shocked. She realized President Donald Trump could be at the ceremony in December and she’s a vocal critic of his. The White House says no decision has been made about Trump participating. Cher says right now her concern is what she’s going to wear. She also just put out her ABBA tribute album, “Dancing Queen.”

POLICE BARRIER COLLAPSES AT GLOBAL CITIZEN FESTIVAL

NEW YORK (AP) — There was a moment of panic during the Global Citizen Festival in New York’s Central Park on Saturday as a police barrier collapsed. Many of the 60,000 people at the concert began running, thinking the collapse was gunfire. Chris Martin of Coldplay assured the crowd that “nobody is trying to hurt anyone,” and there was no need to run or push people. Cardi B, The Weeknd and John Legend were among the performers.

LORETTA LYNN GIVES UPDATE ON HER HEALTH ISSUES

NEW YORK (AP) — Loretta Lynn’s stroke did not take away any of her feistiness. She tells People magazine she told her physical therapist shortly after her stroke last year that she did not want help and the next time she checked in, she’d be using her arm and hand again. Lynn says her therapist could not believe it when Lynn made it happen. As Lynn was starting to get better, she fell and broke her hip on New Year’s Day. Lynn says many people thought that would be it for her, but she says, “I’m moving all my parts and I can still sing.” Lynn says her mind sometimes gets fuzzy, and she uses a walker and sometimes a wheelchair, but she hates the wheelchair. Lynn just released an album called “Wouldn’t It Be Great.”

“IRIDESCENCE” BROCKHAMPTON IS NUMBER ONE ON BILLBOARD ALBUM CHART

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A music group with barely any radio play and no hit singles has the number-one album in the country this week. “Iridescence” by the 14-member rap collective Brockhampton takes the top spot, moving 101,000 units. It’s the group’s fourth album. They have never had a single appear on any Billboard song chart, but they have had 540 million on-demand streams. Josh Groban’s “Bridges” is in second on the album chart, followed by Eminem’s “Kamikaze.” ″Scorpion” by Drake is in fourth and Travis Scott’s “Astroworld” is in fifth.

TOM PETTY BOXED SET, “AN AMERICAN TREASURE,” IS RELEASED

NEW YORK (AP) — Tom Petty’s daughter says she kept hearing his voice in her head as she considered songs to release as part of a new boxed set. Adria Petty says the team would find something they thought was cool and she could feel her father cringing and saying, “Wait, this is too soon. I just died. Why are you putting stuff like this out?” Benmont Trench of The Heartbreakers helped with the decision process for the boxed set. He’s not sure what will happen to the band. He says they’ve been approached about projects, but nothing has felt right. The boxed set, called “An American Treasure,” came out on Friday.
