Knights win AAA regional title

HUNTINGTON — Cabell Midland claimed the Class AAA, Region IV girls tennis team title and qualified players in all but one event for the three-day state tournament beginning Thursday in Charleston.

Cabell Midland had an undefeated regular season (12-0) and won the Mountain State Athletic Conference championship. On Thursday at Parkersburg City Park the Knights outscored Parkersburg, 19-12, in the Region IV competition.

“I am extremely proud of these girls and the hard work and effort they put into it every day,” Cabell Midland coach Cynthia Machmer said. “If they can stay loose and enjoy the moment I feel everything will work out for us. We have a great fan base full of support and encouragement from parents as well as the boys team. This truly has felt like we are a big family this year. Everyone supports each other regardless if they win or lose.”

Region IV state tournament qualifiers include the top four finishers in No. 1 singles, the top three in No. 2 singles, the top two in No. 3 singles, the No. 4 singles winner, the top three in No. 1 doubles, the top two in No. 2 doubles and the No. 3 doubles winner.

Fisher were Region IV champions. Senior Channing Varnum was a region runner-up. Doubles tandems of Varnum/Rider and Davis/Fisher were also regional winners.

Riner defeated CeCe Weiler from Huntington High in the No. 2 singles finals, 8-1. Davis topped Cameron Hanshaw from Parkersburg in No. 3 singles, 8-3. Fisher beat Kelsie Sanders of Parkersburg in No. 4 singles, 8-1. Lexie Smolder from downed Varnum in No. 1 singles, 8-2.

Varnum/Riner advanced with a win in No. 1 doubles against Smolder/Kate Limanen from Hurricane, 8-4. Davis/Fisher defeated Brylee Jackson/Laurel Sanders of Parkersburg in No. 2 doubles, 8-3.

Cabell Midland’s lone state qualifier for the boys was Region IV fourth-place Alex Cottrell in No. 1 singles.

“Alex has worked extremely hard this year to get to where he is and deserves great things to happen for him,” Machmer said.

The Parkersburg Big Reds won the Region IV boys title with 18 points and Huntington High was the runner-up with 12.

Huntington High senior J.J. Mercer, an Ohio State University recruit, breezed to his fourth consecutive boys regional crown in No 1 singles with a win against Jacob Boone of Parkersburg, 8-0. Mercer also joined with Will Touma for a victory in the No. 1 doubles finals against Seena Daadevandi/Boone for the Big Reds, 8-3.

Huntington High’s Luke Lovejoy goes to the state tournament along with Weiler as the boys No. 2 singles third-place finisher and the girls No. 2 singles runner-up respectively.

Chafe Kaye from Hurricane was the boys No. 2 singles runner-up and Domenick Hoh of the Redskins placed second in No. 3 singles. Kaye/Hoh took second place in No. 2 doubles. Other state qualifiers from Hurricane are third-place finishers A.J. Noel (No. 1 singles) and Noel/Thomas Heffner (No. 1 doubles).

Smolder/Limanen for the Hurricane girls also qualified as the No. 1 doubles runner-up.
