UPCOMING TODAY:

OHIO STATE-TEAM DOCTOR

COLUMBUS, Ohio — On paper, Richard Strauss was a well-regarded Ohio State University physician who examined young athletes for decades as a team doctor and sports-medicine researcher. Some former athletes recall him differently: Locker-room voyeur. Serial groper. “Dr. Jelly Paws.” In interviews with The Associated Press in recent weeks, seven former athletes and a former nursing student shared detailed allegations of sexual misconduct dating back to the 1970s against the doctor, who killed himself in 2005 at age 67 and is only now under investigation. The case has powerful echoes of the scandal involving former sports doctor Larry Nassar, who sexually abused hundreds of girls and women while he worked for Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics. By Kantele Franko, Andrew Welsh-Huggins and John Seewer. SENT: 1,230 words, photos.

TAKATA-RECALL

NEW YORK — Mazda is recalling nearly 270,000 vehicles with Takata airbags that have the potential to explode. Chemicals used to inflate the air bags can deteriorate in some conditions, causing them to deploy with too much force, blowing apart a metal canister that can result in flying shrapnel. The potentially deadly defect can be found in passenger-side airbags on certain 2003-2008 Mazda6, 2006-2007 Mazdaspeed6 and 2004 MPV vehicles nationwide. It also involves 2005-2006 MPV models in certain states. SENT: 130 words.

IN BRIEF:

— BICYCLIST KILLED-REWARD: More reward money is being offered as authorities seek tips in the hit-and-run death of a bicyclist five years ago in Michigan’s northwestern Lower Peninsula.

— COMICS SHOP-WEDDING: The groom wore a Batman shirt while the bride chose the Flash. Clint and Melanie Salmi are giving marriage a second try with help from an Upper Peninsula comic book shop.

SPORTS:

BBA--RANGERS-TIGERS

DETROIT — Bartolo Colon starts for the Rangers, with a chance to take over sole possession of first place on the career list for victories by a pitcher born in Latin America. UPCOMING: 600 words, photos. Game starts at 7:10 p.m. ET.
