Janesville dog named guest of honor at 5K

May 3, 2019

JEFFERSON -- The Humane Society of Jefferson County will welcome Janesville’s JoLynn Burden and her dog Rex as this year’s Furry Friends 5K Guests of Honor.

The sixth annual Furry Friends 5K Run/Walk will be held Saturday, May 18, at 9 a.m. at the Jefferson County Fair Park.

Last year, Rex was selected as runner-up in People Magazine’s Cutest Rescue Dog contest. His story was hand-selected from over 10,000 submissions.

Born with a disorder that doesn’t allow him the use of his front limbs, Rex was dropped off at a shelter in Texas when he was just a few weeks old. Rex was eventually brought to Wisconsin, adopted by Burden and is now living the good life.

Rex uses a wheel cart donated by Gunnar’s Wheels Foundation to help him get around, but Burden says Rex behaves just like any other dog. She and Rex make regular visits to local schools, talking with students about the power of determination and overcoming obstacles. She hopes Rex’s feature in People Magazine will inspire others to adopt pets with disabilities.

Those interested in participating in the Furry Friends 5K are encouraged to register before May 8. To register, stop by the humane society at W6127 Kiesling Road in Jefferson to fill out a registration form or go online to furryfriends5k.org/register.

All proceeds will benefit the Humane Society of Jefferson County. For more information, call Sara Lastusky, community outreach coordinator, at 920-674-2048.
