September 2, 2018

A 69-year-old Bath man was killed when the vehicle he was driving hit a tree Saturday in Aiken.

Daniel J. Lewallen was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision, according to an email from the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.

The accident occurred around 6:54 a.m.

The email stated that Lewallen and his son, who was a passenger in a 2002 Ford F-150 truck, were traveling on Storm Branch Road near Aiken.

When they reached the intersection with Silver Bluff Road, Lewallen “failed to stop at the stop sign,” according to the email. The truck crossed over Silver Bluff Road and struck a large tree.

Lewallen’s son was injured, and he was transported to an Augusta hospital.

The Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol are investigating the crash.

The full name of Lewallen’s son and the extent of the son’s injuries weren’t known at the time the Coronor’s Office released information about the wreck.

The results of Lewallen’s toxicology tests are pending, the email stated.
