Fla. Teacher Receives Reprimand
BUNNELL, Fla. (AP) _ School officials reprimanded a teacher who used inflammatory literature that criticized Jews and the disabled as part of a 10th grade honors class homework assignment.
Elinor Phelan apologized to the 25 students in her Palm Coast High School English class and received a written reprimand for poor judgment and insensitivity.
Phelan distributed a handout and told students to rate a set of sentences from ``the most specific to the most general.″
One set of sentences contained such statements as: ``Jews hate Catholics,″ ``Jews hate Christians,″ and ``Jews are Christ killers.″
A separate set dealt with disabilities: ``Barbara Benton got an `A’ in Film Appreciation even though she is blind,″ and ``Handicapped people often try harder to succeed than so-called `normal’ people.″
Principal Larry Hunsinger said, ``This is not something that is a part of our curriculum.″
He said Phelan brought in the worksheet from outside the school system and he had not been aware that she planned to distribute it in class last week.
