August 31, 2018

The Schuyler Historical Society met on Monday, Aug. 13, at the annex. The meeting was called to order by President Jim Viglicky followed by the Pledge to the flag. Twelve members attended the meeting.

The secretary read the minutes of the minutes of the July 9th were approved as read. The treasurer read the financial report. The income included an anonymous donation of $1,000.

Lloyd and Paul gave a maintenance report. Poncho Hernandez fixed the north outside wall of the annex for $800. The leak around the restroom at the museum was from upstairs by the back door. Believe the wind forced the rain under the door. Some items from the former Dr. Okey building were donated by DeWayne and Cathy Kracl. A load of iron from the building was sold and museum received $59.50. A display of some items from Dr. Okey’s building will be set up at the annex.

Curator Judy Brezina gave a report on activities at the museum. We need to get a humidifier to keep it drier in the museum. After discussion, it was voted to purchase a dehumidifier.

For Labor Day, the chamber is asking businesses to decorate a window with the theme “Celebrating Schuyler”. Suggestions were made by Judy and will work on the decoration. Members were asked to sign up for what hours they would like to work at the museum on Labor Day.

A tour group from Iowa will visit the annex and farm room on Wednesday, Aug. 15. Betty asked if anyone could help with the tour.

A crafters and vendors area will be set up on Sunday, Sept. 2, in the South Park Area 1. The Historical Society will have a flower sale and will need volunteers to set it up and take down. Set up time is 8-8:30, sales start at 9:30 ending 3:30.

Discussion was held the open house on Labor Day. The museum and annex will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. but will be closed during the parade. Lloyd has made some contacts to have veterans ride the patriotic float in the parade. Volunteers will work on the float Aug. 22. Jim Viglicky will oversee the decorating. Sign up sheets were available for members to indicate when they could work on the float and Labor Day.

The back room of the annex farm room needs to be painted. The society has the paint only to have someone do the painting, a setup date and time was not decided at the meeting. A suggestion was made to paint a mural on the north outside wall of the annex. After a lot of discussion, Willard Horak will check into having some students do the mural, will bring information to next meeting.

The work has begun for Habit for Humanity. We will provide lunch and drink with the Eagles, splitting the cost of expenses.

Lloyd has made contact with Joseph Hall, Rock ‘N’ Remember Elvis Tribute, for a fundraiser. The date is February 22. We will set it up similar to the one we had before when Joseph was here. We would have advanced ticket sales.

The next monthly meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 10 at the annex, 1112 C St. in Schuyler. Anyone interested in historical facts may attend the meeting.
