Truck Careers Funeral, Kills Three

June 17, 2000

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) _ A speeding truck careered through a funeral procession Saturday, killing three people and injuring two others in southern Egypt, a police official said.

The truck driver sped away after smashing through a column of mourners walking to the cemetery in the town of Sohag, about 240 miles south of Cairo, police said.

The driver was arrested only after his truck overturned in a second accident, 30 miles outside Sohag. There his vehicle hit three other cars on the road.

The reason for his reckless driving was not immediately known.

Road accidents claim an average of 5,000 lives a year in Egypt. Motorists routinely flout traffic laws, and the shoddy condition of country roads makes driving hazardous.
