Trojan girls 0-2 at tourney

January 1, 2019

CAMBRIDGE — Julia Holtz scored 12 first-half points but was held to just four in the second half as Fort Atkinson defeated Dodgeland 44-31 in the consolation game of the Cambridge Hall of Honor Tournament on Friday.

The Blackhawks trailed by one point at the half and outscored the Trojans, 26-12, to pick up their first victory of the season.

“We’re a solid defensive team, and really in the second half, we had to start taking some chances,” Dodgeland head coach Barry Hinrichsen said. “They made the right pass at the right time when we were having to try to trap and take some chances to change the momentum of the game. I don’t think it was as much that our defense wasn’t as good in the second half. I think we had to try to gamble a little bit more to change the momentum.”

Fort Atkinson freshman Taylor Marquart scored 10 second-half points to lead the charge.

“My heart is going a little quick. I knew going into today that we had a chance to get one if not two,” Fort Atkinson head coach Greg Riddell said. “You could tell they wanted it. By them wanting it the way they did makes me feel so much better. It was exciting for sure.”

The Blackhawks figured out how to attack the Dodgeland zone defense, which included Marquart hitting a 3-pointer on an out of bounds play, a layup one minute later and Corinne Stoutenborough knocking down a deep two-pointer to take a 27-21 lead with 10 minutes, 25 seconds remaining.

“Some missed free throws and some untimely turnovers, we’re right in that game,” Hinrichsen said.

Lexi Garant and Anna Schoenike also hit jumpers in the second half, and Maggie Opperman made a layup with 28 seconds remaining.

“We knew that we were going to have to start making shots. We talked about, if we can do everything in rhythm, we’re not as bad as the stats show,” Riddell said. “Catching our shots in rhythm and shooting them really made the difference today.”

Marquart hit another 3-pointer with 9:17 remaining and then a layup two minutes after that to go up by nine points.

Using skip passes against the zone allowed Marquart, who scored a team-high 12 points, to find some space on the weak side and drive to the basket.

“You’d have the back people all the time,” Marquart said. “And skipping it, I could just get it and score.”

Riddell added, “We know with Taylor’s ability that if we can swing the ball fast enough, that’s going to open up a driving lane. She’s learning as a freshman, and she was definitely able to understand what we’re asking from her and decided to take that to heart.”

Fort Atkinson (1-11) got out to an 8-0 lead as Kat Brandl made three layups to open the game and then Marquart got to the basket from a skip pass.

Dodgeland (5-7) relied on Holtz to create offensively throughout the game. Holtz made two 3-pointers and scored 12 of her 16 points in the first half as the Trojans led 19-18 at the break.

“She was going to want to penetrate however she could. We had to make sure on the ball screens, we were doing our job to slow her down and making the other girls beat us if we had to,” Riddell said. “Our defense is really what kept us in that one.”

Twice in the first half, the Blackhawks led by eight points, the first with 13:50 remaining and again when freshman Tyla Staude made a layup with just under nine minutes to play.

That’s when Holtz took over. She hit a 3-pointer, a runner in the lane and then another 3-pointer to give the Trojans a 15-14 advantage with 5:28 left.

Dodgeland lost the other game to Cambridge 58-35.
