Needles 66, Mountain View 12 in NIAA contest
NEEDLES — Jordyn Breaux scored 18, Paige Murch 16 in the Lady ’Stangs NIAA 2A South League win over Mountain View Christian, 66-12, Dec. 18 in The Corral.
Admittedly, for hometown fans the game was pretty much a preview event for the main attraction Dec. 20 when Needles hosts Lincoln County: The schedule calls for girls JV to tip off at 3, boys JV at 4:30, girls varsity at 6 and boys varsity at 7:30 p.m. PST in The Corral.
Needles’ held Mountain View to a single bucket in the first quarter and shut them out entirely in the fourth. Coach Manuel Calderon had his whole bench on the floor for large parts of the game, including pretty much the entire second quarter when Mountain View managed to score six.
Still, he commented afterwards that his girls didn’t play down, as they’re wont to do, at least in the early part of the game. There were some lapses of focus toward the end.
The Lady ’Stangs were penetrating to the basket: Breaux made the only three point shot of the night for Needles and the Lady ’Stangs went to the free throw line just eight times, sinking five.
Needles led 30-2 after one, 45-8 at the half, 55-12 after three quarters of play.
