Boys golf: Winona’s Matt Turner signs with Winona State
Winona State University head men’s golf coach Jeff Straight has announced that Winona Senior High School product Matt Turner has signed his National Letter of Intent to join the Warriors next fall for their 2019-20 season.
“Matt is one of the best players to come out of the Winona area in a very long time,” Straight said. “He works very hard on his game and is extremely dedicated to improving as a player. Matt had other colleges recruiting him, but he was a player I was not going to let get away from us. Staying in your hometown to golf can create some pressure, but it also comes with a big upside for Matt as he already has a great network of people that love and support him. I look forward to working with this talented young man on and off the course while supporting his transition to college golf.”
Turner has played on the WSHS varsity squad since seventh grade and was a captain each of the last two years. He had an average score of 75 in his sophomore and junior seasons and set a record at the Jewel High School Invite with a 64.
The senior was an all-Big Nine Conference selection as a freshman, sophomore and junior.
He has three wins on the Minnesota Junior PGA Players Tour and was the 2018 Section C Champion.
