Woman Gives Birth after Heart Transplant
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) _ A 22-year-old heart transplant recipient who got pregnant against her doctors’ advice has given birth to a daughter.
Tarina Roberts gave birth by Caesarean section on Thursday to 6-pound Keana Jo Chapman.
Both mother and baby were in good condition Saturday, said Bob Fitzsimmons, spokesman for Ohio State University Medical Center.
Roberts, who suffers from a condition that weakens the heart muscle, had a transplant in 1993.
She defied medical judgment when she decided to have a baby. A pregnancy can stimulate a mother’s immune system to reject her transplanted heart, according to hospital cardiology director Carl Leier.
Roberts said her pregnancy was normal except for extra bed rest.
Her only concern now is that her baby may also have heart disease.
``I know what I went through, and I don’t want to see my kids go through the same thing,″ she said.
