Two Killed in Beverly Hills Holdup

November 14, 1997

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) _ Armored car guards shot to death two robbers who attempted to ambush them outside a bank Friday, police said.

The two guards were not injured in the attack, which occurred shortly after 10 a.m. as they made a pickup at Charter Pacific Bank on busy Wilshire Boulevard.

``They had exited with a cartful of money and were confronted by two armed gunmen outside the door,″ Lt. Frank Salcido said.

The robbers demanded the money but instead, both guards pulled their guns and opened fire, Salcido said.

``We heard the shots and the bank personnel knew that it was gunshots and they asked us all to hit the ground and we did,″ said Stephanie Scott, a customer in the adjoining Bank of America. ``We stayed there through a few series of shots until it looked as though everything was calm.″

Televised reports showed chalk circles indicating at least seven shots were fired and bank customers reported hearing many more.

Salcido said it unclear whether the robbers managed to fire. Both were mortally wounded and pronounced dead a short time later at nearby Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Salcido said.

The dead were not immediately identified.

Televised reports showed the bleeding men lashed to gurneys being placed into ambulances.

A white Brinks truck, its passenger door open, was parked at a curb and bounded by yellow police lines.

Two large patches of blood stained the walkway near a bank entrance.

An armored car guard was shot to death in February 1996 during a holdup after picking up cash from a school cafeteria in suburban Carson. A Brinks guard was shot to death during another holdup in suburban Stanton in October 1996.

In March, gunmen disguised as construction workers robbed a guard of more than $6,000 in Hollywood.

Two months ago, gunmen in ski masks robbed the downtown depot of Dunbar Armored Inc. At least $1 million was taken.

Last week, two men were arrested after they allegedly held up a Brinks armored car driver by squirting him with pepper spray in a Malibu supermarket parking lot.
