Maine 10, Villanova 3
ORONO, Maine (AP) _ Brian Seguine led Maine’s 15-hit attack with three hits and three RBIs as the Black Bears defeated Villanova 10-3 Thursday night in the NCAA Northeast Regional baseball tournament.
Shawn Tobin’s solo homer in the third inning gave Maine the lead, and the Black Bears never trailed. Maine (46-16) led 8-0 before Villanova fought back with three runs in the sixth.
Designated hitter Glen Stupienski added three hits and an RBI for Maine. Jack Stanczak, Cliff Foley and Mike Evangelista each had an RBI for Villanova (37-14-1).
Maine’s Larry Thomas (9-3) pitched seven innings for the win, allowing three runs and striking out nine. Brian Kenney (6-5) took the loss for Villanova.
Earlier, top-seeded Clemson defeated Princeton 13-5, and Mississippi State defeated Towson State 10-4.
That sets the stage for Friday’s matches - Princeton-Towson State, Clemson- Villanova and Mississippi State-Maine. The championship of the double- elimination tournament is set for Sunday.
In the tournament’s opener, Clemson jumped to an early lead against defeated Princeton.
Joe DeBerry started with a two-run homer in the first inning as Clemson (57-8) ran up a 6-1 score by the sixth. The Tigers scored seven more runs before Princeton answered with four runs in the ninth.
Jim Crowley had three RBIs off two hits and Jeff Miller had a homer and a single for Clemson. Richey Nash had three hits and three RBIs for Princeton (24-21).
Clemson’s Jason Angel (14-1) earned the win, allowing six hits, three walks and one run with five strikeouts over eight innings. Kevin Butterfield (5-4) took the loss for Princeton.
In the second game, Rex Buckner hit a two-run homer that sparked a five-run sixth inning as Mississippi State defeated Towson.
Mississippi State (41-14) jumped to a three-run lead in the first inning and never trailed. Paul Petrulis contributed three hits to the 11-hit tally by the Bulldogs.
Erik Sheetz led Towson State (27-22-1) with three hits, including a two-run homer in the ninth inning.
Mississippi State’s B.J. Wallace (10-5) pitched six innings to earn the win, allowing four hits, two runs and five walks with five strikeouts. Larry Raynor (7-3) took the loss for Towson State.
