Workers Seize Ship, Crew in India

April 28, 2001

CALCUTTA, India (AP) _ Firing shots into the air, some 200 armed men seized a Panamanian ship for several hours, demanding that they be hired to unload its cargo, authorities said Friday.

The raid occurred Thursday as the M.V. Jubilee neared the Calcutta port in eastern India, Magistrate Alapan Bandhopadhyay said.

The ship was carrying timber from Malaysia to be offloaded at Calcutta, capital of West Bengal state.

The armed men boarded the ship, taking some of the crew hostage at gunpoint, Htun Win, the ship’s captain, told Press Trust of India news agency. ``They wished to be stevedores for the logs,″ he said.

The captors released the crew and the ship several hours later. Seventy people were arrested, Bandhopadhyay said.
