LOCAL TRACKS: Racing Embraces Honoring Veterans
Motor sports is a big part of Memorial Day weekend. Every sport does something to honor those, past and present, who serve our country, but perhaps none moreso than racing.
Tonight is Veterans Night at Penn Can Speedway in Susquehanna. There’s free grandstand admission to all military members with ID or proof of service.
Events like this are special for drivers such as Dan Solomon. The 28-year-old Modified driver from Pleasant Mount spent six years in the National Guard, including a tour in Kuwait (2012-13).
“The brotherhood between everybody I know is amazing,” Solomon said in March at Speed Sport Showcase. “I still have buddies I’ve known since I first went in, I would do anything for them. It’s like the movies. Everything is a brotherhood. It’s absolutely true.”
Solomon likes it when he sees cars sport American flags and the names of fallen military personnel.
On his car, however, he only has a sticker for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness. He said he doesn’t like to flaunt his military career.
“There were a lot more people in the service who did way more than I ever did,” Solomon said. “I respect those guys more than anything.”
This is Solomon’s fourth year driving a Modified and his second full-time season.
Racing runs in his family. His father, Matt, raced Modifieds in the late 1970s to the early 1990s.
Last season, Solomon finished 12th in the Modified point standings at Penn Can Speedway and 16th at Five Mile Point Speedway in Kirkwood, N.Y. So far this season, he was 11th in the Penn Can opener last week and has finishes of 14th and 19th at Five Mile Point.
He still is looking for his first Modified feature win. His best career finish was a third place at Five Mile Point last July 7.
“I’ve got a bunch of heat race wins, led a bunch of laps,” Solomon said. “We’re definitely competitive. We’re probably one of the more low-budget operations, but we definitely can run up front.
“Win or lose, we go out and have fun. It’s a big family thing.”
Brian Malcolm of Lake Ariel brought out the broom last week. First, he took the checkered flag in the 30-lap Modified feature at Penn Can. The next night, he made it 2 for 2 this season at Five Mile Point, winning that 30-lap Modified feature. He did it, too, by nipping Travis Smith from Binghamton, N.Y., at the finish line on the final lap. ... In the 30-lap Modified feature at Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, Alex Yankowski from Covington Twp. finished 20th, Frank Yankowski of Throop was 21st and Scranton’s Bobby Trapper Jr. was 28th. ... In the USAC East Coast 360 Sprints 25-lap feature at Grandview Speedway, Eddie Strada from South Canaan placed 16th. One night earlier, he was third in the 25-lap feature at Big Diamond Speedway in Minersville. Strada is third in the USAC East Coast 360 Sprints standings with 255 points, 41 behind leader Steven Drevicki of Reading. ... Five Mile Point Speedway has a full program of Modifieds, Sportsman, Factory Stocks, Four-Cylinder Stocks and the Xcel 600 Modified Tour on Saturday at 7 p.m. ... Hamlin Speedway holds a regular program Saturday at 6 p.m.
