Bears Sign Briggs; waive Matthews

June 7, 1996

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) _ The Chicago Bears announced today that they have signed linebacker Gregg Briggs, a 1992 Dallas Cowboys draft choice, and waived seldom-used quarterback Shane Matthews.

Briggs, who played in 11 games for Dallas last year and recorded nine tackles, was expected to compete on special teams, the Bears said.

Matthews’ fate was sealed when the team picked up 16-year veteran Dave Krieg as a free agent. The Bears plan to open camp July 19 in Plateville, Wis., with three quarterbacks: starter Erik Kramer, Krieg and second-year pro Steve Stenstrom.
