WASHINGTON (AP) _ President Bush has settled on the former president of the Texas Rangers baseball team to be ambassador to Australia, a government official said Thursday.

Tom Schieffer, a Dallas attorney whose client portfolio centers on oil and gas companies, worked with Bush when the former Texas governor was part owner of the baseball team.

The government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed a report in Thursday's Forth Worth Star-Telegram that Schieffer soon would be named to the diplomatic posting in Canberra, the Australian capital.

Schieffer, a Democrat, refused to comment on the report but told the newspaper he has spoken with the president. ``I have talked to him from time to time and he's the one who will have to tell you what we talked about,'' he said.
