Man gets life sentence for DUI crash that killed 2

September 26, 2018

MILTON, Fla. (AP) — A Florida man has been sentenced to life in prison for driving drunk and getting in a fatal crash while fleeing a deputy.

The Pensacola News Journal reports that 35-year-old Kailen Kelly was sentenced Monday after pleading no contest to two counts of DUI manslaughter and other charges.

Witnesses say Kelly spent a May day drinking before driving his truck and rear-ending another vehicle. He fled and sped past a marked Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office SUV. The deputy followed with lights and sirens but broke off pursuit when Kelly refused to pull over.

A short time later, Florida Highway Patrol says Kelly was travelling 88 mph (142 kph) when he crashed head-on into another vehicle, killing 17-year-old Stormie Harrell and 17-year-old Sidney Dowdy. Two other people were seriously injured.
