Tri County students wins range judging contest

Tri County junior Alexx Malchow bested 190 other range judging contestants to win the Area 6 Range Contest on Wednesday, Sept. 18. The competition was held southwest of Valparaiso, Nebraska, and was hosted by the Upper Big Blue Natural Resources District.

Malchow teamed up with Jauques vanZyl, Evan Larson and Creighton Niemeyer to win the overall championship and senior division championship. Each ag-education student earned a purple team ribbon and a purple rosette.

There were 17 schools from southeast Nebraska competing. Individually, Tri County swept the top four places. Malchow earned the purple rosette, vanZyl came home with the second place blue ribbon, Larson earned the individual red ribbon and Niemeyer received the fourth place white ribbon. Chad Niemeier also ribboned for Tri County. Patty Monnin competed in the senior division. Diller-Odell claimed the second place team award.

In the Junior Division, Lucas Weise’s fourth place finish and Cole Siems sixth place finish led Tri County to third place. Others on the team included Drew Garrison and Nicole Vodraska. Each member ribboned individually. Deshler won the Junior Division with Blue Hill claiming second. Dave Barnard is the Tri County Ag Education Instructor.

The students identified plants from a list of over 125, evaluated three sites for type, condition and degree of use and competed a range management quiz.

Contestants also evaluated a grazing scenario and made recommendations. Other schools at the contest were Red Cloud, Auburn, Aurora, Norris, Nebraska City, Conestoga, Sandy Creek, Blue Hill, Diller-Odell, Deshler, Osceola, Blair, St. Edward, Plattsmouth, Lewiston and Milford.
