Hero Cop Dies Of Injuries
NEW YORK (AP) _ A police officer who was severly burned when he rushed into a blazing apartment building to warn its occupants died of his injuries Saturday, police said.
Francis LaSala, 33, died at the burn center of New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, where he had been treated for second and third degree burns over 40 to 50 percent of his body, said Sgt. Raymond O’Donnell, a spokesman.
He was injured last Tuesday when he entered a burning apartment building after passersby ran to the police Emergency Service Unit building next door and reported smoke and flames in the building.
LaSala was trapped on the third floor before a firefighter found him and brought him out.
LaSala was single and had been with the Police Department since 1974 and with Emergency Service Unit One since 1982, O’Donnell said.
