Bomb hoax at Sydney premier of musical ‘Cats’
SYDNEY, Australia (AP) _ Prime Minister Bob Hawke and British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber were among some 1,000 people evacuated from a theater Saturday night because of a bomb hoax at the Sydney premiere of Webber’s stage musical ″Cats.″
The patrons waited outside for an hour while police conducted a search without finding any explosives and the performance resumed.
A police spokesman said an anonymous caller telephoned central police headquarters and said, ″Theatre Royal, 10 p.m.″
London’s West End opening of ″Cats″ in 1981 was interrupted by a bomb scare just before the curtain calls.
