John Giertz, 78, of Kankakee, passed away Wednesday, (Dec. 26, 2018) at Watseka Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. He was born March 10, 1940, in Chicago, the son of Eldon P. and Lorraine (Hartman) Giertz.
He retired as a Tech 1 from Shapiro Developmental Center. John was an usher and layman at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kankakee and was a Boy Scout leader. He participated with Theatiki reenactment at Kankakee State Park, and he helped out at the corral petting zoo and as a cook at Cowboy Church in Ritchie. John also helped out on Gospel Night at Peoples Church in Manteno.
He loved his horse, Poco, and his cat, FlatCat. He also loved playing cards and games with friends at Mercy Housing. John had many friends: at church, musical and those who loved horses as much as he did. John would help wherever asked.
John was proud to serve his country in the U.S. Army for two terms in Vietnam.
He is survived by two sisters and one brother-in-law, Janet Clemens and Vicki and Kenny Pearce, all of Missouri; two brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Linda Giertz, of Alabama, and Eldon R. and Bula Giertz, of Missouri; special friends, Craig and Judi Penley, of Bonfield, Linda Oberholtzer, of Bonfield, Jackie Baxter, of Kentucky, and Jana King, of Bonfield; many other friends from all across the country; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Kankakee, until the 11 a.m. funeral service. A luncheon will follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Kankakee.
