Rutgers 85, Delaware State 60

December 10, 1997

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) _ Geoff Billet and Alvydas Tenys each scored 10 first-half points and Rutgers used a 17-0 run to put the game away early in an 85-60 victory over Delaware State on Tuesday night.

Rutgers (2-4), which snapped a three-game losing streak, got a season-high 14 from Tenys, a touted freshman center from Lithuania who struggled offensively since scoring 10 points against Princeton on opening night. Billet had 16 points and five assists, Rob Hodgson 13 points and seven rebounds, Eric Clark 10 points and Jeff Greer seven assists and three steals.

The Knights, averaging just 55.6 points per game, were coming off a season-low 44-point effort against Connecticut. Rutgers shot a season-high 56 percent, hitting that figure in both halves.

Albert White’s 15 points and 14 second-half points by Terence Hood could not prevent Delaware State (2-4) from losing its fourth straight overall and 13th straight against non-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference competition.

Despite 13 first-half turnovers and 4-for-10 foul shooting, Rutgers took a 42-19 lead at intermission. The Hornets committed 20 turnovers, shot 0-for-6 from the line and were outrebounded 17-13 in scoring a season-low for the first half.

The game began with seven lead changes, and Delaware State led 13-10 after seven minutes. But a short jumper by Hodgson started Rutgers on a 17-0 run to make it 27-13 with 8:32 remaining.

Brian Parker’s layup stopped the Rutgers run, but the Knights used a 15-6 run over the final 5:37 for a 23-point halftime advantage. Delaware State never got closer than 17 in the second half.
