SALT LAKE CITY (AP) _ A van carrying 14 people slammed into a tractor-trailer early Wednesday, killing four people and critically injuring several others, authorities said.

The passengers included children, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Doug McCleve said.

The van hit the truck at about 5 a.m. on Highway 89 in southern Utah about eight miles east of Kanab. The truck driver wasn’t hurt, McCleve said.

By the time troopers arrived at the scene, several passersby had taken some of the injured people to Kane County Hospital. All 10 of the survivors were at the hospital, said spokeswoman Laurali Noteman.

Several were injured critically, and will probably be airlifted to trauma centers either in Phoenix or Salt Lake City, McCleve said.
