Davis Sparks Vanderbilt Past So. Carolina
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) _ Dee Davis scored 14 points and had 10 assists as No. 24 Vanderbilt defeated South Carolina 88-71 on Sunday.
Vanderbilt (19-9, 8-6 Southeastern Conference) went 9-for-10 from the free-throw line over the final two minutes, taking its largest lead on Jen Risper’s foul shot with 25 seconds.
Iva Sliskovic scored 20 points for South Carolina (17-10, 7-7), with Melanie Johnson adding 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Cherish Stringfield and Carla Thomas scored 15 points each for Vanderbilt, with Caroline Willliams adding 14 and Nicole Jules 13.
Vanderbilt put together an 11-0 first-half run to take a 32-17 lead on Jules’ basket with 3 minutes remaining, then weathered a late South Carolina spurt to lead 38-24 at halftime.
South Carolina trailed 46-28 early in the second half on a basket by Jules, but went on a 10-3 run to get back in the game and cut the deficit to 55-47 on Johnson’s basket with 12 minutes to play.
The Gamecocks cut further into the margin when Shannel Harris scored with 5:46 remaining, making the score 66-59. But Caroline Williams hit a 3-pointer on the next Vanderbilt possession.
